About the Shenkman Arts Centre

Lower LobbyOn June 5th, the doors to the greatly anticipated Shenkman Arts Centre will open to the public. This municipal arts facility will make a profound impact on the cultural life of the city. It will play a vital role in ensuring artists are given the forum they need to nurture creativity and audiences are given access to dynamic and thought-provoking arts programming in a facility that matches creative excellence.

The Shenkman Arts Centre will be a community focal point and gathering place for young and old, offering English and French programs at all levels. It will provide a forum for a myriad of activities under one roof. Just imagine a dynamic centre in which a media artist has access to the latest technology to express his ideas; young and old alike can learn how to paint or sculpt; a local theatre group is holding rehearsals for its next play; a school group is enjoying an interactive exhibit in the gallery; and community members are listening to the inspiring music of a chamber orchestra.

The goal of the Shenkman Arts Centre is to establish a creative hub that will:

  • provide access for east end residents to arts and culture programs close to home;
  • promote the advancement of arts education;encourage personal development of youth through the arts;
  • provide employment for artists, within a professional purpose-built facility; and
  • create opportunities for the growth and development of local arts organizations.
